Fashion is a form of expression, a depiction of a person’s
personality which is often distinctive as seen in the manner the person
dresses. The African continent consists of billions of people with
diverse culture and beliefs. African fashion therefore takes its roots
from the beautiful African culture.
African fashion has evolved from the very traditional look
which serves as symbol of status and allegiance to tribal roots to the
modern day look which involves combining the old with the new, wearing
traditional clothing along with western styles.
African fashion involves the fusion of unique African
traditional fabrics. Some of these fabrics are the African prints
(commonly referred to as Ankara in Nigeria), the mud cloth (which has
its origin in Mali), the kuba cloth (which was discovered in the
Democratic Republic of Congo) and the kente cloth (which is very popular
among the Asante empire, Ghana).
Also, the African fashion industry has experienced
tremendous growth over the years, thanks to reputable African fashion
designers like Duro Olowu, Jewel- Lisa, Deola Sagoe, Kofi Ansah, Lanre
Da Silva Ajayi, Tiffany Amber and other great designers who have made
their mark in the fashion industry both nationally and internationally.
